How a Libra New Moon can inspire your writing

We’re a few days past the new moon, although we’re still within the eclipse energy, but as far as writing goes, this is consistently relevant information!

Any new moon is a wonderful time for setting fresh intentions, beginning new creative projects, and embracing new perspectives. This one (Sep ’24) is a little different because it’s also an eclipse, but I’m going to keep writing this article as usual so that it’s evergreen, in case you are coming across it later. In terms of writing and creative coaching, you can use this advice at any time. As a person with a Libra stellium, this new moon practice has a special place in my heart!

This new moon is in Libra, the sign of balance, harmony, and relationships. Libra energy invites us to find beauty in all things, to seek out fairness and equality, and to create meaningful connections. Libras are known for their love of aesthetics, their diplomacy, and their knack for seeing multiple sides of any situation. Today, we’re going to tap into that Libran energy to shape our stories, build our characters, and even choose the settings where they come to life. And, as always, you can use your new knowledge to observe those around you and see if they might have strong Libra placements in their astrological charts!

Libra

Let’s break down some of the defining characteristics of a person with strong Libra energy in their birth chart.

Keywords for Libra: Harmony, diplomacy, fairness, sociability, charm, beauty. Romantic, indecisive, peace-loving, cooperative, gracious. Idealistic, balanced, artistic, thoughtful, gentle, persuasive. People-pleasing, indecisive, flirtatious, non-confrontational. Adaptable, open-minded, relationship-focused, aesthetically-driven.

A person with strong Libra placements—especially Libra as their Sun, Moon, or Rising sign—might display any or all of these traits. Libras are generally social beings who value connection and collaboration. They’re often charming and easygoing, with a natural talent for bringing people together. They are drawn to beauty and balance in all things, whether that’s in relationships, their surroundings, or their creative work.

Libra is ruled by Venus, the planet of love, beauty, and pleasure, which gives them a refined aesthetic sense and a desire for harmonious surroundings. They tend to avoid conflict and may go to great lengths to keep the peace, sometimes to the point of sacrificing their own needs or desires. This can make them appear indecisive or overly concerned with pleasing others. However, their diplomatic nature and ability to see multiple sides of an issue make them excellent mediators, capable of finding creative solutions that work for everyone.

So how does this translate into our writing?

As with every sign, Libra’s energy has both its strengths and its challenges. A Libra-inspired character could be a charismatic hero (charming, fair-minded, cooperative) or a complex antagonist (indecisive, manipulative, overly focused on appearances). The best characters are those who are nuanced and layered, blending virtues and flaws in a way that feels authentic. Giving a character a specific astrological energy helps you craft a more consistent personality and understand how they might react in different situations.

Character Development

Here’s how you can do it: Take the list of Libra keywords and use them to build your character from the ground up. Consider a character you already have in mind or start fresh with a blank slate. How would these Libran qualities shape their personality, behaviour, and choices? Let’s explore a few archetypal characters to get started. Feel free to swap genders, traits, or settings to suit your story!

The Charming Diplomat: A character who is always looking for peace and harmony. They are skilled at navigating social situations, reading people, and finding common ground. But their desire to keep everyone happy can make them seem indecisive or even two-faced.

We like them. They are graceful and kind, always looking for the silver lining and the best in people. Their talent for mediation and diplomacy helps them bring warring factions together or solve seemingly impossible problems. Their journey might involve learning to stand their ground, make tough decisions, or assert their own needs.

We don’t like them. They can be frustratingly indecisive, always weighing options but never taking a firm stance. Their desire to be liked might lead them to be overly accommodating or even manipulative. Their arc could involve facing a situation where they have to choose a side, make a decision that won’t please everyone, or face the consequences of their own avoidance.

The Elegant Artist: A character driven by a love of beauty, art, and aesthetics. They see the world through an artistic lens and strive to create harmony and elegance in everything they do. But their idealism can sometimes clash with reality, leading to conflict or disappointment.

We like them. They are creative, inspiring, and passionate about their craft. Their sensitivity and eye for detail bring depth and beauty to their work, whether they’re a painter, musician, writer, or designer. Their arc might involve learning to accept imperfection or finding balance between their artistic vision and practical constraints.

We don’t like them. They can be overly concerned with appearances, valuing style over substance. Their idealism might make them unrealistic, or their pursuit of beauty could lead them to be superficial or vain. Their journey could involve learning to appreciate the messy, imperfect side of life, or finding a deeper meaning beyond aesthetics.

The Reluctant Judge: A character who strives for fairness and justice, but struggles with the weight of their own decisions. They are wise and fair-minded, always seeing multiple perspectives and considering all sides. But this desire for fairness can also paralyse them, making it hard to make decisions or take action.

We like them. They are thoughtful and just, always striving to do what’s right. Their commitment to fairness makes them a strong, moral character, and their ability to see both sides makes them a valuable ally. Their arc could involve making a difficult choice, embracing their own sense of justice, or learning that not all situations have a clear “right” answer.

We don’t like them. They can be overly hesitant or passive, afraid to make a decision or take a stand. Their indecisiveness might frustrate those around them, and their reluctance to act could lead to negative consequences. Their arc might involve learning to trust their own judgment or facing the fallout of a decision they delayed too long.

Your turn! Choose one of these characters or one of your own, and see where the Libra traits take you. Then factor in some of these responses to the adversity they might experience in your story.
