Here’s a confession. For years I consumed astrology content the exact same way most people do, despite being fascinated by it. Mercury retrograde is happening, everything’s going to be delayed and difficult, I’d nod, and then go about my day exactly as I would have anyway. Knowing didn’t change anything. I think that’s true for almost everyone who’s ever been curious about this stuff. You can know your entire chart off by heart and still not have a single day go any differently because of it.
Most astrology content follows the same shape. It names a placement (Mercury in Gemini, say) and describes it. Quick minded, chatty, curious, needs mental stimulation. Then it stops. It’s given you a personality description, which is interesting for about as long as it takes to read it, and then it evaporates, because a description isn’t a tool. It’s a mirror. You look in it, you go, huh, that’s a bit me, and then you put it down and go back to writing your emails exactly the way you always have.
I think this is actually the biggest reason people drift away from astrology after an initial burst of interest. Not because it isn’t true, but because it never gets past being interesting into being useful. So here’s the mindset shift that helped me move from theory to practice, and it’s simpler than you’d think.
Every placement in your chart is really answering a few questions at once. What, meaning what kind of energy is this, how, meaning how is it showing up, and where, meaning which area of life does it actually show up in. The what comes from the planet, the how comes from the sign, the where comes from the house. Once you’ve got all three pieces, you’re one small step from a tool, because now you can ask the most important question. Given what this energy actually is, and how and where it shows up, what’s one specific thing I could do differently there this week?
That third question is the whole method ☺️ most astrology content stops after question two.
Here’s an example.
Mars (the what), the planet of drive and anger, is in Cancer(the how), sitting in the 4th house (the where) of home and family. The what and how is Cancer Mars, which fights protectively and indirectly, usually through mood rather than direct confrontation. The where is the 4th house, home and family specifically. So, this person might fight for their family, and/or they might be moody at home, showing their anger passive-aggressively, emitting their feelings silently rather than addressing them head-on. Most content stops there, interesting, feels true, now what? The method asks the third question. Given that this energy shows up around home and family, and through mood rather than words, what’s one thing to do differently there? Often, it’s naming the mood instead of just being in it. I’m feeling prickly about something at home right now, rather than going quiet and defensive. See how simple it is?! I’m not saying you should change your basic makeup – that’s not possible! – but there are ways in which, when we recognise those tendencies in ourselves taht are less than helpful, we can make our lives (and the lives of those we share space with) easier.
One more example. Venus (what), love and money, in Sagittarius (how), in the 2nd house (where) of your own resources. The what and how is freedom-loving, honest, values expansion and is easily bored by restriction. The where is your own money and self worth. So this person might ignore their bank statement because they’re busy spending money freely on the things they love – travel or experiences or new walking boots 🥾 Given that, what’s one specific thing they could try? Probably, stop budgeting in a way that feels like a cage. Aknowledge (however reluctantly) that we have to live inside conventional budgeting restrictions, but within that structure build in one genuinely unrestricted category every month, so the rest of the system actually holds. Put aside money for rent and food, and give themselves a set amount each month that is totally free to spend.
And lastly, a slightly less obvious one. Saturn, our planet of discipline and long term structure, in Aquarius, in the 11th house of friendships and community. As well as sometimes indicating loneliness in groups or always feeling on the outside, this placement might take discipline seriously around causes and group progress, carrying a weight of responsibility that isn’t actually theirs to carry. The specific fix, more often than not, might be noticing whether they’re shouldering more for a friend group or a cause than anyone’s actually asked them to, and handing one piece of it back.
A couple of things worth knowing before you try this on your own chart. Don’t skip straight to the action without sitting with the what, how, and where first. The solution only works once you’ve understood the specific flavour of the energy. And this isn’t about using astrology to excuse a pattern. Mars in Cancer isn’t a permission slip to sulk instead of communicating, it’s a description so you can catch yourself doing it and choose differently.
Here’s a quick bit of history, since I can’t resist. This what-how-and-where structure isn’t something anyone invented recently, it’s old. Hellenistic astrologers were reading charts this way two thousand years ago, sign for character, house for domain of life. I work in the Whole Sign house system specifically, the oldest attested method we have, where each house simply is a whole sign. It fell out of fashion for centuries once more complex systems took over, and has only really been revived properly in the last thirty or forty years as more of the old texts got translated and taken seriously again. (That doesn’t make other methods less-than; they can all be used effectively – but I digress…!)
So that’s the method. What is the energy, how and where does it show up, and what’s one specific thing you could actually try. None of it is deterministic, by the way. Having Mars in Cancer doesn’t doom you to communicate anger badly forever, it just means that’s a possible starting pattern, the one you might default to under pressure unless you consciously choose otherwise. Astrology used well is a mirror with a suggestion attached, not a life sentence.
If you try this on a placement of your own, I’d love to hear how it goes.
